Emory and the CDC Petitions to Annex Into Atlanta

Local

After almost a year of discussion, last week, Emory University and the Centers for Disease Control (CDC) officially submitted a petition to be annexed into the City of Atlanta. Though filing separate petitions, the combined annexation would include Emory University, the CDC and Children’s Healthcare of Atlanta Egleston hospital. This move will go down as one of the most significant changes in landscape for the City of Atlanta in decades.

Why the move? MARTA! By becoming a part of Atlanta, Emory University’s 630-acre campus and the CDC, if approved by the City Council, will then have access to funds generated from last year’s transportation referendum. MARTA could then move forward with plans for the much anticipated Clifton Corridor expansion. This light rail project would go a long way in easing traffic congestion in the metro area.

Next steps: The City Council will review the petitions and have a series of public hearings. An official vote to accept these petitions are expected in the fall.
