Dekalb County Fights Emory Annexation

Officials in Dekalb County have made it clear, they are not happy about Emory University’s application to annex into the City of Atlanta and will go to court to stop it. By a unanimous vote, the Dekalb County Commission approved a resolution that looks to include an arbitration hearing before any annexation could occur.

The County outlined several objections in a lengthy letter to the City of Atlanta objecting to this annexation. The City of Atlanta is scheduled to debate this annexation on September 5th.

Dekalb County is looking to take advantage of law that requires arbitration in an instance where a county government contests an annexation.

In June of this year, Emory University, Children’s Healthcare of Atlanta and the Centers for Disease Control filed a petition to annex into Atlanta. This annexation would mark the most significant land grab by the City of Atlanta in decades. If approved, it would also open the door for the expansion of MARTA with their Clifton Corridor.
