August 21st marked the first day for candidates who have been saying they are running for elected office to put their money where their mouths are! Qualifying for municipal elections around the metro area started on Monday, August 21st and ends Friday, August 25th. Beginning August 28th, the Government Affairs Committees of both the Residential and Commercial boards will conduct interviews for qualified candidates in order to determine which contenders will best serve as “REALTOR Champions” once elected.
This year promises some exciting and grueling races. The City of Atlanta will have the most significant election since 1973 when the old Alderman system was abandoned for the current Council set up. With so many Council members either seeking higher office, retiring or facing stiff competition, combined with the Mayor being term limited, in 2019 Atlanta will have a new Mayor, new Council President and at least 7 out of 15 new Council members.
Additionally, the City of Roswell will have a new Mayor, Sandy Springs will see at least 2 new council members and the City of Fairburn will have a new Mayor and new Council member.
After the interviews are complete, the Government Affairs Committees will put together a list of supported candidates for distribution to our membership. If there are candidates you know that should be a part of this interview process, please contact our Government Affairs Director, Aaron Johnson at 404-732-0631 or Aaron@atlcbr.com
