Georgia lawmakers have begun a broad review of the state's property tax system that could shape local government finance and property taxation for years to come. The Georgia House Blue-Ribbon Study Committee on Local Government Taxation, Funding and Budgeting held its first meeting on July 22 in Cartersville and will continue meeting throughout the summer and fall before making recommendations for the 2027 legislative session.

On July 15, 2026, the House Transportation and Infrastructure Committee held a hearing on the bipartisan Fixing Emergency Management for Americans (FEMA) Act (H.R. 4669). NAR supports the legislation, which would speed disaster assistance, prioritize cost-effective home repairs, strengthen mitigation efforts, create a single application for federal disaster aid programs, and help communities rebuild to more resilient standards that reduce future losses and support insurance availability.

With the Georgia run-off elections and the national mid-term elections just around the corner, it’s important to consider how housing is impacting this year’s election season. As housing affordability and availability continue to impact families across the country, housing has become one of the most important issues influencing voters at every level of government. Rising home prices, increasing rents, limited inventory, and growing development pressures are affecting not only first-time homebuyers but also long-time residents, seniors, and workforce populations seeking stability in their communities. Voters are paying closer attention to candidates and elected officials who prioritize policies that support housing supply, affordability, property rights, and responsible community growth.

On March 13, the President issued an executive order that directs federal agencies to develop regulatory best practices for housing construction. The Department of Housing and Urban Development (HUD), in coordination with the White House, released the State and Local Best Practices for Home Construction on May 20. The report calls on state and local governments to reduce construction costs, unlock land for residential development, and accelerate permitting timelines through various policy options, noting that regulatory costs account for more than $100,000 of the final price of a new single-family home. READ REPORT’S SUMMARY HERE
