Supreme Court’s Ruling on Alabama Congressional Seats Likely to Impact Georgia

In early June, the Supreme Court of the United States (SCOTUS) issued its ruling in an Alabama case which challenged the state’s current congressional map. The case alleged that Alabama violated the Voting Rights Act of 1965 and the SCOTUS agreed. Georgia is currently facing its own federal lawsuit regarding the Georgia Congressional map that was signed into law in 2021. The 6th, 13th, and 14th Congressional Districts are explicitly challenged.

According to Anthony Michael Kreis, political scientist and a professor with Georgia State College of Law, "Georgia had the opportunity when they redistricted the last time to include another congressional district that had a majority of Black voters," Kreis said. "But the State of Georgia, the General Assembly, did not do that."
